Now more than ever, effective communication matters. With a greater focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning and analytics in the curriculum, business students must enter the workforce with enough technical savvy to hit the ground running. And students who can pair their field-specific knowledge with strong communication skills are poised to impress prospective employers.
Recruiters consistently rank verbal and written communication skills as two of the most important skills for college graduates to have.
To prepare students for success, the Fox School’s Business Communication Center (BCC) offers free peer tutoring and review services. The BCC will help you with everything from writing assignments to polishing presentations and preparing graduate school essays. Peer tutors focus on your strengths as a communicator and provide feedback to help your professionalism shine through.
“Our tutors have not only passed the Business Communications course, but they have spent additional hours training in the business communications style. Students who use our services can expect meaningful feedback about grammar, style and structure of writing assignments,” says Shelby Green, peer tutor coordinator, Actuarial Science and Risk Management and Insurance double major, Class of 2022.
“We help students brainstorm ideas for assignments and calm nerves by kindly critiquing presentations. Our goal is to improve a student’s writing over the course of a semester and become a go-to reviewer for any and all business assignments,” Green continues.
And did you know one of the best-kept secrets? The BCC has a presentation room available for you or your team to practice and get immediate feedback from a tutor.
“Our presentation room has a large screen so you can mimic the ‘slides-on-a-big-board’ experience. It’s big enough to accommodate up to half a dozen or so people, so your entire team can practice your group presentation and get immediate feedback on your delivery,” says Jimmy P. Miller, director of the BCC and an assistant professor in business communication.
“We can also help with slide design, idea sequencing, audience engagement techniques—any part of your presentation preparation,” Miller continued.
The BCC’s mission is to help students develop the writing, speaking and professional skills needed to excel in their coursework and succeed in today’s cross-functional and team-based business environments.
