Alter Hall, the home of the Fox School of Business, is a bridge to the future for thousands of current students and the many more who will follow. Since its doors opened in 2009, Alter Hall has symbolized the dramatic progress of the school and ushered in a new era of learning. The building was the final piece of a grand puzzle that includes world-class faculty, research, the latest technology, and bright, ambitious students.
From the top floor of Alter Hall, you get a stunning view of the campus and Philadelphia. The glittering skyscrapers of Center City. The majestic bridges that span the Delaware River. The vibrant, culturally rich neighborhoods that make up the city. From this vantage point, you can see how each connects seamlessly to the other. It’s this same seamless connectivity that is found throughout Alter Hall, which is so much more than a building containing classrooms and offices.
When plans were first drafted for this state-of-the-art facility, the consensus was that it should be more than simply a space for classrooms and offices: it should be a place where students, faculty, and alumni could connect and collaborate. Every design element, every piece of technology, every decision regarding this building—all were made with these two themes in mind. It’s why Alter Hall offers high-tech resources and amenities such as an entrepreneurship lab, alumni and student lounges, mentor meeting rooms, research institutes, laptop and wardrobe lockers, breakout rooms, computer labs, lecture halls, auditoriums, and the Capital Markets Trading Room.
Through the generosity of many, many people, this building came into fruition. Numerous donors chose to support this endeavor, especially Dennis and Gisela Alter with their $15 million naming gift. They have given the Fox School a new home and have helped expand the educational opportunities available to the current and future students of the Fox School.
As the Fox School entered into its second century of innovative business education in Fall 2018, it opened a second “home”—1810 Liacouras Walk. A major undertaking of both renovation and new construction, 1810 Liacouras Walk provides an additional 77,000 square feet across six additional floors for teaching, research, executive education, mentoring and outreach efforts.
The first floor is home to the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute (IEI) and the 1810 Accelerator, a space for the Temple University entrepreneurial community to share knowledge, make connections and grow their early-stage ventures. The building also includes collaborative coworking spaces and new classrooms with advanced technology to personify online and traditional learning. With the additional space, the Tutoring Center and the Business Communications Center (BCC) expanded, and state-of-the-art research labs were built for the Data Science and Business Analytics Institute and Center for Neural Decision Making.
