Research Participants

We are always looking for participants for our research studies, which run throughout the year. For most studies, we seek right-handed adults between the ages of 18 and 75.

The following are the types of studies that we recruit participants for:

  • Behavioral studies: We collect participant responses using Internet-based surveys as well as surveys administered by computer and pen/paper in our lab.
  • Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) studies: For these studies, we record brain responses using an MRI scanner. Participants lie on their back on a table that slides into the scanner, then perform tasks with visual/auditory stimuli. Researchers use fMRI in an noninvasive way to obtain images of brain activity over time. These images provide clues about which areas of the brain are related to cognitive processes like decision making, and how different brain regions work together. Our fMRI studies are conducted at Temple University Brain Research & Imaging Center (TUBRIC), located in the basement of Weiss Hall.
  • Biometric studies: Physiological measurements, also referred to as biometrics, consist of various sensors that measure the activity in bodily systems in response to things that are experienced through our senses or imagined. This can be direct measurement of organs that are connected to the peripheral nervous system (e.g., the pupils of the eyes, sweat glands in our skin). We collect participant responses using tools for physiological measurements such as eye-tracking, skin conductance, heart rate, breathing, and electromyography.

Compensation is based on the average duration of individual’s participation for the study. If you are taking a course in psychology or marketing at Temple, you may earn SONA credits for your participation. Please discuss participation with your professor regarding SONA credits before signing up for a study.

Undergraduate Students

If you an undergraduate student interested in volunteering in the center and learning more about research involving multiple methodologies, please reach out to us. We are always looking for motivated individuals with a passion and curiosity for research. Given the complexity of the methods, we prefer volunteers who are early in their program so that you have sufficient time to learn and contribute to a research project in a meaningful manner.

If you are interested in exploring further opportunities, please reach out to .
