Biography
Samuel D. Hodge, Jr. is a professor of Legal Studies at Temple University where he teaches both law and anatomy related courses. He has received multiple teaching awards including being named a Temple University Great Teacher, a Master Teacher, Best Instructor, and he is the recipient of the Award for Innovative Use of Technology, the Provost Award for Innovation in Teaching General Education, the John Topoleski Memorial Award for Outstanding Instruction and his Anatomy for Lawyers program is the recipient of the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Continuing Legal Education. Sam’s interactive and innovative teaching style has received national media attention including stories in The New York Times, the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Philadelphia Inquirer, National Public Radio and television. During his 45-year career at Temple, Professor Hodge has taught more than 25,000 students at all levels of instruction. He has also received a number of service awards included the Stauffer Alumni Award for Outstanding Faculty Service.
Sam has been the featured speaker at more than 500 conferences and programs for attorneys, judges, physicians, insurance professionals and governmental agencies on medical/legal issues around the world. Sam is also one of the most published scholars on medical/legal matters in the United States. His books include: Anatomy and Physiology for Legal Professionals; the Forensic Autopsy; Head Trauma and Brain Injuries; The Spine; Clinical Anatomy for Lawyers; the award-winning book, Anatomy for Litigators; Thermography and Personal Injury Litigation; Law for the Business Enterprise; and Law in American Society. He has co-authored several of the annual supplements to Orthopedic Disability and Expert Testimony, and has written chapters in litigation texts on how to examine and cross-examine the medical expert. Other endeavors include the authoring of over 175 articles published in a variety of medical and legal journals. His research has been cited in court opinions, books, articles and legislation. He also served as the expert peer reviewer for the text: Law and Ethics in Neurocritical Care.
Professor Hodge is a graduate of Temple University Beasley School of Law, the Graduate Division of the Law School and he received mediation training at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University Law School. He is a member of the American College of Legal Medicine and the American Association of Anatomists.
