This spring, the Master of Accountancy program had to adjust to a new environment inside and outside of the classroom. Classes moved online, speakers were rescheduled and students scrambled to adjust to testing changes.
One of the spring events, the annual visit to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Washington DC, was shifted to an online format. This June, David Estabrook, senior associate chief accountant in the Division of Enforcement at the SEC will participate in a virtual seminar addressing the SEC’s investigations into fraudulent financial reporting. In July, James G. Kaiser, board member of the PCAOB, will speak to the MAcc class in a virtual colloquium providing information on board members’ role.
In March, CPA Exam testing sites across the country closed due to the COVID-19. MAcc students typically use the term break in April and May to study and sit for the Auditing Section of the exam. To keep the process moving forward, some students have traveled to sites in neighboring states, whose sites opened more quickly. Pennsylvania opened limited sites as of May 1.
Still, as academic director Sheri Risler shares, there’s been a silver lining: incoming students are able to get a headstart on studies. Admitted MAcc students are able to study for the Business Environments & Concepts (BEC) portion of the CPA Exam through a course with Becker CPA Exam Review. In addition, students have been able to work on their required online Harvard Business Publishing (HBP) Excel certification course before classes begin in the fall. These activities would typically not commence until the start of the fall semester.
The Department of Accounting is excited to welcome its 10th-anniversary MAcc class in August. Over 40 students will be the tenth cohort of the one-year 30-credit program at the Fox School of Business.
