About the Program

Emerging HR Leaders: Your Path to the C-Suite is designed for experienced HR professionals moving into senior leadership and/or HR oversight roles. Participants will enhance their expertise through six dedicated workshops, a two-day Board Presentation Skills session, and customized one-on-one coaching. Led by experienced Temple University faculty and industry experts, this unique learning opportunity begins in January 2022.

The program is jointly hosted by the Department of Human Resource Management and the Center for Executive Education at Temple University’s Fox School of Business.

Six workshops

PHRE workshops are spread across six days and encompass a wide range of topics.

  • Strategic Business Alignment: Explore why the human capital objectives of an organization must be in alignment with company strategy, as well the operational, customer and financial objectives.
  • Leadership Skills for Executives: How to hire, develop and promote the best candidates for leadership roles within your organization.
  • Financial Acumen: Demystify the relationship between human capital (and related) spending and the company’s profitability and sustainability.
  • Metrics and Analytics: Take a closer look at measuring HR ROI and productivity to ensure your human capital priorities add value to the organization.
  • Leading Innovation: Learn how to develop your staff’s potential by using design thinking techniques. The workshop will also show participants how to develop a cultural mindset and how leaders can promote this way of thinking.
  • Global HR: How companies create and maintain alignment between global HR strategy and global business goals and structures while developing, deploying and supporting a network of globally capable leaders who collaborate to identify synergies across global operations.

Facilitators

John A. McClendon - Strategic Business Alignment

Associate Professor, Human Resource Management, Fox School of Business

John McClendon has 39 years of demonstrated achievements in human resource management, including private sector management, university-based scholarly research publications and award-winning university teaching at the BA, MBA, international MBA, executive MBA and PhD levels. He has been an associate professor of Human Resource Management (HRM) at the Fox School of Business since 1989 and has served as the HRM Department chair since 2016. In his role as chair, John manages all administrative activities of the HRM department, comprised of 20 full-time faculty and 32 adjunct faculty. To date, John has initiated numerous new strategic initiatives including the online auxiliary Master of Science in Human Resource Management program, creation of the SHRM Certification non-credit training program, integration of the business management major into the department, and creation of Senior HR Advisory Group (SHRAG), comprised of senior-level HR executives who serve as a bridge between higher education and the private sector. Over the course of his tenure at the Fox School, John has taught 17 different management courses. Teaching honors include Executive MBA Program–Philadelphia Faculty of the Year (2015), Professional MBA Program–Faculty of the Year (2014) and Great Teacher Award (2006).

Michael Guglielmo - Leadership Skills for Executives

Assistant Professor of Practice, Human Resource Management, Fox School of Business

A business professional with nearly 40 years of experience at Fortune 500 and mid-sized companies, Michael Guglielmo has held a variety of roles including senior executive, mid-management and staff positions in accounting, finance, materials management, information technology and human resources. He draws on this unique mix of experiences to create practical solutions to the leadership and business operations challenges facing growing organizations. Mike served as Vice President of Human Resources for the largest division of Genesis HealthCare, a $6 billion publicly traded enterprise with nearly 100,000 employees, and as Vice President of Talent Acquisition and Development for Genesis HealthCare. He has had operational oversight responsibilities for Career Staff Unlimited, Inc., one of the nation’s leading providers of temporary staffing services to the healthcare industry. He currently serves as the academic director for the Global Executive MBA program at the Fox School of Business. Since 2016, he has served as an assistant professor of instruction in the Department of Human Resource Management. Prior to that, he served as an adjunct instructor for over 25 years. Teaching honors include Teacher of the Year Award for Instructional Innovation (1999) and Adjunct Teacher of the Year Award (2010).

Sherry Williams - Financial Acumen

Assistant Professor of Practice, Department of Accounting, Fox School of Business

Sherry Williams joins the Fox School with extensive experience in the financial services industry. She has held roles as an audit and risk management executive for organizations including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, the State of Georgia and SunTrust Bank. She currently acts as the Executive Vice President and Chief Audit Executive of Amalgamated Bank. Sherry is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM) and Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CASM). She is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and serves as a board member and treasurer of Cross World Africa, a nonprofit committed to empowering lives and overcoming inequality through opportunity in Kenya. Sherry earned her DBA from the Fox School and received her MBA from Kennesaw State University and her BS in accounting from Central Connecticut State University.

Frank J. DiBernardino - Metrics and Analytics

Managing Principal, Vienna Human Capital Advisors, LLC

A highly accomplished human resources strategic advisor, Frank has 40-plus years of experience working with organizations in manufacturing, health care, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, transportation, financial services, petroleum and academia. Over Frank’s career, he has consulted with a number of clients including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Boeing Helicopter, Campbell Soup, DuPont, Sunoco, Tesoro Petroleum, Quaker Chemical, Reader’s Digest, Amdahl, Duke University and Johns Hopkins University. Recognized as a trusted advisor to executive management, Frank has deep expertise in human resource program strategic planning for large and mid-size organizations. His background includes strategic planning, client relationship management, consulting practice leadership, labor negotiations, underwriting, staff development and line management. Prior to forming Vienna Human Capital Advisors in 2003, Frank was a principal at Mercer Human Resource Consulting, a global human resource consulting firm. Frank was also a founding principal at Foster Higgins, a global employee benefits consulting firm. An author and developer of the patented Vienna Human Capital Index™, Frank isolated the total investment in human capital and quantified the ROI, productivity and liquidity of the people investment. A decision support tool, the Vienna Index™ is a premier reporting, strategy development and management tool for the head of HR to use in the C-suite and boardroom. Frank was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 Delaware Valley HR Person of the Year Awards ceremony.

Michelle Histand - Leading Innovation

Director of Innovation, Independence Blue Cross

As Director of Innovation at Independence Blue Cross, Michelle Histand uses design thinking to help internal and external customers creatively solve challenging business issues. She is also an assistant professor at Temple University, where she teaches creativity and innovation in the Fox School of Business, and is the associate director of the Flinders Project, leading an initiative to develop the innovation curriculum at Flinders University in South Australia. She loves helping people realize their creative potential and develop new ideas. She has her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and her master’s degree in writing studies from St. Joseph’s University. She is beginning her PhD in creativity and innovation this summer at University of the Arts.

Jim Portwood - Global HR

Professor Emeritus of Management and International Business, Fox School of Business

Jim Portwood is presently Professor Emeritus of Management and International Business in the Fox School of Business. He is also director of the Temple University Center for European Studies. Since 1990, he has been an adjunct professor of management at the Graduate School of Business, Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, and at Institut de Gestion Sociale, Paris. He has since led projects promoting economic and social transformation (including development of college-level business curricula) in Central and Eastern Europe that were funded by the United States Agency for International Development, the Soros Foundation, the Ukrainian Federation of America and the World Bank. These projects include reform efforts in the public as well as private sectors. He has also been active internationally as a consultant with companies including American Express, Nycomed Pharmaceuticals, General Motors, Ford Motor Company (Europe), Dominion Textiles (Canada), Manulife Insurance (Asia), McKinsey & Co. (Japan), NEC (Japan), KPMG (Europe), General Electric, British Telecom, Pioneer Seed (Hungary) and MOL-Hungarian Oil Company. He currently holds the position of Pro-Chancellor at Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB) in Cameroon. His responsibilities include promoting international connections with other institutions of higher learning, arranging global classroom and distance learning programs with these institutions to enhance student educational opportunities at BUIB, and leading BUIB faculty development initiatives including improvement of online teaching skills and use of web-based teaching platforms.

Personalized Coaching

Participants will work one-on-one with a certified coach to create individualized leadership development plans that will use insights from Hogan and 360 assessments and focus on specific competencies.

Board Presentation Skills

A highly interactive two-day “Board Presentation Skills” session will prepare participants to present to and influence other C-level executives and the board of directors. This customized session teaches transferable skills that communicate the board presence required to achieve organizational impact. The curriculum has been developed with future leaders in mind and will provide each one of them with the ability to interact with board members and other company stakeholders. Participants will engage in a variety of situations designed to help them develop an executive presence to prepare them for boardroom and C-suite interactions. This engaging session will be facilitated by Diane Craig, founder and president of Corporate Class, Inc. For over 30 years, Diane has been providing leadership development training to multinational businesses, Fortune 500 companies, business schools and government agencies to optimize performance and potential across every organizational level. Recognized internationally for her Executive and Leadership Presence Training System, Diane facilitates customized coaching, workshops and seminars to organizations around the world: from Europe to the Gulf Region, Asia, Australia, South Africa and across the Americas – North, Central and South.

Program Cost

The $17,000 per participant fee includes all workshops, two-day Board Presentation Skills session, and one-on-one coaching. Early bird registration by Oct. 29 is $15,500. Temple alumni cost is $15,000. Group discount is available.
